about

Väärt is a band with roots in Swedish Lapland. -

The girl Marja in the song "Surkas" was a member of the religion "Læstadianismen", which is a revivalist movement that was very common in the northern part of Scandinavia 1800-1900. The story in the song tells us how Marja was bullied in school, found no support and killed herself. But in the bigger picture the song is about standing against suppression. Daring to stand against "Surkas". The word Surkas is a northern slang for "the crowd".
